At Work

Heaps and Piles

One of my pleasures is finding material that lends life to ideas. I can drift into a contemplative state while foraging through heaps and piles.

Grinding

Surface grinding removes the skin of the metal; rust, oxidation, organic build up.  By exposing bare metal, the cutting torch slices with minimal residue, slag.  Welds penetrate deeply and splatter is minimized. I finally grind the weld bead for fine transitioning.

 Cutting

To maintain a clean cut, the torch head must travel at a constant speed, distance and angle to the metal. I draw down muscle tension, and listen to the sound and progression of the rapidly oxidizing metal.

Welding

In the mind, ideas coalesce, images move to the conscious.
Welding in three dimensions, I use magnets, clamps and made fixtures to keep the pieces in place.
The image, now defined in metal, becomes anchored and bound to its structure by the weld.

The weld is permanence.
